How to Get Your Business Cited by ChatGPT: 7 Steps That Work
Step 1: Baseline your visibility (don't skip this)
Before changing anything, measure where you stand. Ask each major AI engine the 5–10 questions your customers actually ask — "best [category] in [city]", "top [product] for [use case]", "[your brand] reviews". Record three things: whether you're mentioned, whether you're cited as a source, and who appears instead of you. This baseline is the only way you'll know whether your changes worked. It's exactly what we do in our free AI Visibility Audit if you'd rather not do it manually.
Step 2: Deploy complete structured data
JSON-LD schema is how machines read your business. At minimum: Organization (who you are), Service or Product (what you sell), FAQPage (the questions you answer), Article with a real Person author on every post. After Google's 2026 core updates pushed E-E-A-T signals to the center of ranking, pages with proper author markup and complete schema showed measurably better stability — and structured data helps every AI engine parse and extract your content reliably, not just Google.
Step 3: Rewrite key pages answer-first
Open your most important service page. Does the first paragraph directly answer "what is this and who is it for"? If a reader needs to scroll past a hero slogan, three value props and a testimonial carousel to find out what you actually do, an AI engine gives up sooner than the reader does. Direct answer up top, supporting detail below — every page.
Step 4: Add real FAQ content (not filler)
FAQs are the single most extractable content format: a question, followed by a self-contained answer. Build them from questions customers genuinely ask — your inbox, your reviews, your sales calls are the source material. Keep each answer complete on its own: research shows AI engines prefer lifting passages of roughly 130–170 words that fully resolve the question without needing surrounding context.
Step 5: Make your claims citable
AI engines repeat specific, verifiable statements and skip marketing fog. Compare: "We provide industry-leading response times" (uncitable) versus "We respond to every enquiry within 4 business hours" (citable). Numbers, timeframes, prices, named certifications, concrete guarantees — every specific claim is a hook an AI answer can hang a citation on.
Step 6: Build your entity beyond your own site
AI engines cross-reference. A business that exists only on its own domain looks thin; one with a consistent name, category and details across Google Business Profile, industry directories, review platforms and press mentions looks like a real entity worth recommending. Consistency matters more than volume — conflicting addresses and mismatched names actively hurt.
Step 7: Track citations monthly — answers drift
AI models update, indexes refresh, competitors publish. A citation you hold in July can quietly vanish in September. Re-run your baseline questions monthly, log the results, and refresh content that's losing its spot. This is the part everyone skips — and the reason our clients run on a monthly citation retainer rather than one-off projects.
The honest timeline
Technical fixes get re-crawled in days to weeks. Citation movement typically shows in 4–12 weeks depending on how contested your category is. If someone promises you top AI citations in a week, they're guessing — the engines don't work on anyone's schedule but their own.
