How to Get Your Local Business Cited by ChatGPT & AI Search in 2026

TL;DR: When a nearby customer asks ChatGPT or Perplexity "who's the best [your category] near me?", the AI answers from structured data, reviews and third-party profiles — not from whoever paid the most for ads. To be the name it gives: ship LocalBusiness schema with hours and reviews, keep your name/address/phone identical everywhere, earn recent reviews, and maintain the profiles AI engines actually read (Google Business Profile, and Yelp — which Perplexity integrates directly).

Local search moved into the chat window

"Near me" used to mean Google Maps. In 2026 a large share of local discovery starts in an AI assistant: a tourist asking Perplexity for a restaurant, a homeowner asking ChatGPT which plumber to trust, a parent asking Gemini for a dentist with evening hours. The AI returns one or two recommendations with a sentence of reasoning. Local searches are also the most zero-click-resilient — people still act on them — which makes being the cited business unusually valuable.

How AI decides which local business to name

AI engines assemble a local answer from a few trusted signals: structured data on your own site, your Google Business Profile, review platforms, and consistent mentions across the web that confirm you're a real, specific entity. Get those aligned and you become the easy, safe recommendation. Leave them thin or contradictory and the AI recommends a competitor it can describe with confidence.

The local AI visibility playbook

1. Ship LocalBusiness schema — with the details that matter

Add LocalBusiness JSON-LD with your address, geo-coordinates, opening hours, price range, phone and sameAs links to your social and review profiles. Hours and reviews in schema are structurally zero-click-resilient — they feed the knowledge panel and give the AI concrete facts to repeat.

2. Make name, address and phone identical everywhere

Entity confidence is built on consistency. Your business name, address and phone (NAP) should match to the character across your site, Google Business Profile, Yelp and every directory. Mismatches make the AI unsure it's the same business — and uncertainty loses the citation.

3. Keep the profiles AI actually reads

Google Business Profile remains foundational. But note that Perplexity has a direct Yelp integration for local queries — an out-of-date Yelp listing quietly costs you those answers. Claim and maintain both, with correct categories, hours and photos.

4. Earn recent, specific reviews

AI engines weight review volume, recency and sentiment. A steady trickle of recent reviews that mention what you actually do ("re-tiled our bathroom in two days") gives the AI citable, human evidence. Ask happy customers at the moment of delight, and reply to every review.

5. Write answer-first local pages

Create a page per service and per area that answers the money question in the first line: who you serve, where, how fast, at what price range. "We're an emergency plumber covering North Bristol, on-site within 90 minutes, from £90 a call-out" is exactly the sentence an AI can quote.

6. Monitor where you're mentioned

You can't improve what you can't see. Track your brand across the AI engines for your key local queries — either by asking them directly each month or with a citation-monitoring tool — and watch which competitors keep appearing.
